Note: The Graduate and Navitas Coordinators are full members of the Graduate Committee with the same voting rights as other members even though they are “ex officio.” According to Robert’s Rules of Order (10th edition, pp. 466-467), “ex officio” is not a class of membership. “Ex officio” indicates how one became a member of a committee (that is, by virtue of the office he or she holds), not what that member’s rights are. If the rights of ex-officio members are to be restricted, that must be done via bylaws. Otherwise, ex-officio members have the same rights as elected or appointed members, including voting. (See http://www.parlipro.org/faqanswers.htm, Question 4.)

From the Faculty Senate By-Laws: “The Faculty Senate shall be nominated from and elected by the full-time academic faculty and librarians by department or academic unit with a personnel committee, at a ratio of 1:5. Senators shall be elected for two years by the full-time faculty and librarians in their departments or academic units. In departments or
academic units with two or more senators the term of office shall be staggered. The normal term of office for faculty senators shall be from 1 May of one calendar year through 30 April of the second following calendar year.” Thus, based on our current faculty size of 20 professors (which falls into the 16-20 range), we get to elect 4 senators.
